Types of heaters
If your central heating system breaks during the winter, we recommend that you use an electric convector or fan-assisted heater with a thermostatic cut-out that will operate in the event of over-heating.
Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) heaters give off large amounts of water vapour which can cause rot in the buildings woodwork. If they are used, cylinders should be kept to a minimum and ideally changed in the open air away from any source of ignition.
We strongly recommend not using electric radiant heaters and paraffin/oil fired heaters, even as a temporary measure, as they work by emitting heat from an element or flame posing a significant fire risk. Portable heaters should be placed well clear of flammable materials and, where possible, protected against the possibility of being knocked or moved accidentally by the fitting of guards.
Top tips
- Do not leave temporary heaters unattended for long periods of time
- Turn off any temporary heaters when the building is unoccupied
- Never move a temporary heater when it is switched on.
